How does Madison bracketing work?

Madison bracketing is a style of bracketing to allow more flexibility in weight categories for certain divisions.

In Madison bracketing, there are no preset weight classes. At the end of weigh-in, competitors will be sorted by weight. Brackets will then be made by grouping competitors into sets (depending on turnout).

Advantages to the Madison bracketing system:

  • Lower likelihood of not having anyone to compete against, since the categories are based on turnout on the day.

  • Children and teens will no longer cut weight since they won’t know the weight classes in advance.

Madison bracketing is used globally, for example, by the US Grappling organisation (https://www.usgrappling.com/blog/madison-bracketing-system/).

In 2020, Light Kick and BJJ will use the Madison bracketing system.
